KEY ELEMENTS THAT MUST BE INCLUDED.

Every music video has its main elements which describe it and make it unique, which I think I should include in my research. The genre of my music video is pop and after looking at different videos of the same style of music, songs by the same artist, or just similar songs, I have realised and seen what main elements are included in most of them and what the most common thing is.
The elements I must include are:
  • Relatively good looking people: this is because I live around teenagers(my target audience) and I know this is quite important and off putting of videos if they're not too good looking. However, not in all videos.
  • Girls dressed quite "easy"(not many clothes): In music videos of my genre, the girls are dressed to look like they are easy girls, or girls who don't really care. These girls don't normally seem too wealthy but again, not all videos include this. I want this included in my video because one of the girls I am using as a main character is complete the opposite to what I expect from her. I want my video to be really unexpected.
  • Cocky boys: Boys like this really catch people's attention, mainly girl's attention, which I think couldbe one of the main key elements I should include in my video.
  • Beautiful location: I personally think that where you locate your video is actually one of the most improtant things related to a music video because the things around the main characters can catch people's attention. Location should also be very unique, as this will lead to a better review of my music video.
Every pop music video is normally expected to have loads of different shots all put together, and they are normally filmed inside a club, maybe somewhere inside, however, as said above, I don't want my video to be "normal" I want it to be unique and different from all the videos already watched. This could be a good things if people like it, but could also be a bad thing if people don't like it. What I expect my video to be like is filmed in my school campus(beatiful locations), with people who can have fun doing it, and all the key elements said above.

CREATIVE TASK

Here is my creative task, after doing this "fun" activity, I have realsied that all this course should be more based in fun things, and should try to enjoy and make it fun for everyone. This is why I have decided to use this in my final music video, or another one I can make in a while. I could also edit this one and put a sound track in the background or maybe just make it longer.

PLANNING MY LOCATION.

As I have to film and make my video in school grounds, I have thought about filming most of it outside as we have such a beautiful campus, however, the weather has to be looked at really carefully so I can plan my final filming.

These locations are the ones I have thought about so far..

-The silent walk, for the girl to walk away and towards the guy.
-Side of the lake, for the two guys singing alone, no girls involved here, plus Pitbull and colour wash effets.

-South Lawn, Pitbull singing by himself at the beginning.

-Sixth form Centre to have the girls and boys "dirty" dancing, and talking. More privacy.

-Bar in Ghouse, when they're "letting go" and having fun with drinks.

These are most of my main locations, but of course, plan always change and I might and its most likely I will change my mind about some of them and will probably add new ones.

SPECIFIC SHOTS.(points 14 and 15)

-This are the main shots I would like to have in my video, however, plans can change and vary the whole shot order.
Also, there are some bits where I am not too sure what shots I would like to have, so I have decided to wait a few days and think about it just because I want to be 100% sure about these main shots.

QUESTIONS ABOUT VIDEOS.

Thursday 6 October 2011

SECONDARY AUDIENCE RESEARCH.

After looking at various already existing music channels, I decided to focus my research on this one, as their target audience for their adverts  is the most similar to mine. People aged between 16-24 and mostly females. I think I could apply this research to my music video because the music they play is very similar to the genre of mine.

INSTITUTIONS THAT MIGHT PRODUCE, DSTRIBUTE OR EXHIBIT MY VIDEO

Itunes(apple) could distribute and exhibit my video, but not produce it as it is not a production company.

Youtube is a website which can exhibit videos, but not produce them or distribute them. People can ilegally download music videos from Youtube, which might be why I would avoid using this. However, as it exhibits videos, it is another form of "promotion".

Doing some research on the internet, I found this video production company which is for artist with their own style of music videos. I thought this was good, as this is what I am expecting my video to be like when I finish it!

Other videos I have been inspired by.

I was very impressed when watching these videos because of all the editting put into them, and all the settings and everything. These videos have really inspired me because they show the truth at clubs, they show what people do, which I think is very important as it attracts more people.

MY PERFECT AUDIENCE

Now that I have the chance to "create" my own perfect audience, I keep thinking about what I really want, but still not too sure about it. However, what I do want is the target audience to be between 16 and 19 year olds, I have explained already but this is because It hink that is when people are starting to grow up and might fully understand the music video and the things involved in it, therefore they would appreciate it more.
First of all, I would like my audience to dress normally, not too smart but not too casual or chavvie.
For boys I would like them to wear jeans with a shirt and normal every day shoes. However, that doesnt mean I wouldnt like them to hear t-shirts and hoddies, I really would not mind that, in fact I dont mind what they wear as long as it is not just tracksuits, trainners and hoddies all the time. I would like them to be sporty and eat quite healthy, not just vegetables but not always junk food. They must be fun to be around and like to be around their friends, and not stay in and play computer games all day.

As in for girls, I want them to be dressed in casual clothes such as black tube skirts, a nice jumper and normal flat shoes. This is because girls can get too dressed up which I don't like as they think they are better than everyone else. I would like themt o be healthy, not sporty because they would just be too muscley but they must do some exercise. The food they eat should be healthy, but as said above, not just vegetables.

UK TRIBES

To check what audience I would be involved in, I chose to do the UK tribes test on the internet www.uktribes.co.uk and it came up saying I am a townie.  description of townie given is:You are a Townie! Your job might be a bit boring but it brings home the bacon and helps you save up for those two weeks away to Spain. Your weekends are set in stone – trip to the shops in town, buy yourself something nice, head to the All Bar One with friends, have a laff, maybe go for a club, as long as there’s none of the indie weirdo music. Keep it straight, you say.

This can be true, however, I do not want my audience to be just based on "townies",  I would like to have more "variety" of people and taste of music.

Audience

I have been thinking about this for the past month or so, and I wasn't too sure about who was my target audience, but now I have just decided that I want people between the age of 16 and 22 to watch my music video, this is because at school, we live with people aged between 12 and 19, but I would say that the younger ones would not be interested in this type of music video and even if they did, they wouldn't understand the reasons behind it as they won't be mature enough.

My audience research.

I have asked different people relatively easy questions such as What is your favourite type of music? Why?

-Ali Oram: Dance/ Club because it has a heavy beat that i can get into and just chill to, it pumps you up when you need it and it can also just relax you. It also inspires quite a few movies thats i make and the style of the music is also a good style to live.

-Ali Baxter: Indie. cause it is easy to listen to and i like guitars.

-Alvaro Sanchez: Classical music, it helps to concentrate with revision. My favourite author is Mozart, i just love it.

As you can see this is not very accurate but I have also asked some girls in my boarding house and after living there for about 4 years, I know what girls like and we're all ages around 16 and 19. Most of the girls around my ages listen to pop music.

Does a video make a difference to a song?
I would say that it does make a difference, but my own opinion is not the only one that counts so I decided to ask a few people what they thought, and most of them turned out to have the same opinion as me. The reason behind this is when you listen to a song you really like you normally like it because of the artist who would often be in the video and you get to understand the song better. However, this difference it makes isnt always in a good way, a video can "ruin" the song by having bad actors or just having a bad filming group. For example, Rihanna is an incredible singer and very good dancer, but her music videos aren't perfect, sometimes the can be okay, but most of them ruin the songs she sings such as "Rude Boy".

What attracts people to videos?
In terms of what young people like now a days, I strongly believe that there are a few factors which could be considered when choosing a video to watch, these are: how good looking the main characters are, how wealthy they look and how good the are at dancing/singing. Out of those three I would personally say that the singing/dancing is the most important one, because no matter how good looking the characters are if they are bad at singing they are bad. Another important factor which is often considered is how well known the characters are. For example In Rihanna's video "I love the way you lie" She is nto the main character, it is Megan Fox, who is very well known celeb who is good looking and looks wealthy. This is what I mean by those factors considered when watching a video.

What puts people off videos?
As said above, young people teeneagers these days have a very distinctive taste and very simple opinions on music videos. I would personally say that what can put me off a music video is the characters, they must be good "actors" to be able to amke a good video. But also, the atmosphere they are filmed in, which according to Andrew Goodwin's the enviroment and atmosphere have to relate to the song. You can't have a song which claims to have a broken heart but then have a happy themed video.  However, research is not only about myself. After living in a boarding house with 76 other girls, I have come to the conclusion that what can put off a video is the looks and how good or bad they are at singing/dancing.

ANDREW GOODWIN MINDMAP

I have attached the mindmap of Andrew Goodwin's music video theory and why I agree with his theory.

Saturday 1 October 2011

Andrew Goodwin's Theory

Andrew has identified different key facts for music videos:
  1. The lyrics and the visual are linked to each other which means the visual shows what the lyrics really mean.
  2. It can happen that the visual condradicts the lyrics to the song.
  3. The genre of a music video is related to its style and iconography
  4. All the record companies will normally use close ups of the main artists or whoever sings the song.
  5. Many music videos use voyeurism in them, normally in treatment of females.
  6. Intertextual references provide gratification and pleasure for fans and they're likely to be in music videos.
I haven't really decided what exact style i want for my music video, but looking back at my mood board I would like it to be very summery(bit in the rain) and with different characters, not just two main ones therefore I think my music will conform this theory because they visual will relate to the lyrics and I will want close ups of my main characters. I will also make sure that my genre matches my style and iconography. I do really agree with this theory  as after all the music videos we all watch you never realise they way they're done and we're all tricked to "like" them.
